    "The Triple D's of Necessities"

    • We feel very blessed under Father Schultz’s pastoral care to have such frequent opportunities to join in community and break bread together.  Many of you have embraced the opportunity to help out by contributing from our “Triple D’s of Necessities” List.  We consider these contributions extra blessings from Our Lord, which those who are willing and able have shared from their treasure.  Thank you again, from Father Schultz and all the Salty Servers for all you are doing to help make our celebrations extra special!

During many of our events in the Parish Hall, we are often asked, “How can I help?” Many of you have said that you aren’t available to help during pre-event set-up or even on the actual day of our events. However, there are ALWAYS other ways that YOU can help and it would be a HUGE blessing if we could count on you!  We’ve come up with a catchy phrase that will help remind you of the 3 things we are ALWAYS IN NEED OF.   It’s called,

      “THE TRIPLE D’S OF NECESSITIES”!

      #1 DRINKS:

Depending on the event, the kinds of drinks we’ll need will vary.  Here’s a list of ideas...

      •  Country Time Lemonade Mix
      •  Swiss Miss Hot Chocolate Mix
      •  Regular, Ground-Roasted Coffee (we provide the de-caff)
      •  Water (gallon jugs are best, unless we are having a picnic; then, smaller individual sizes are great!)
      •  Juice Boxes for the little ones
      •  Juices by the Gallon (bring at least 3 gallons of the same flavor): Orange, Apple, Pineapple, Lemonade.
      •  Sugar-Free Options, if you prefer them
      •  Sodas or Seltzers, for a change of pace
      •  Ice, Ice baby!!!!  We can always use ICE

      #2 DESSERTS

Bring any kind of desserts you would like to share; homemade or store-bought are fine.

      •  PLEASE LABEL THESE with their names and let us know if there are any known allergens (i.e. nuts)
      •  Fruit baskets or Fruit Salads are always a welcome treat :)
      •  Tell us if your desserts are Gluten-Free. We like to prepare an area specifically for gluten-free foods.
      •  Don’t forget the chocolate cakes with chocolate frosting! YUM!

      #3 DONATIONS OF CASH

Drop some Dollars into the “Salty Servers Donation Box”.  It’s available at all of our events and is accessible to everyone.

      • Events “done right” are not inexpensive and as you already know, we like to do them right!
      • There are also other “unseen” kitchen needs we are saving for:
        • Our bread maker, Piri, is looking for cast iron dutch ovens that can be donated.
        • It sure would be nice to have an ice machine (wish list item #1)

So, now that you know, how can you help with the next event?

    Who we are
    • We are the "Salty Servers" of Transfiguration Church of Syracuse.  From left to right:  Ana, Vincenza & Piri.

My name is Ana McConnell, and I help serve in our Hospitality Ministry. All I can share is my personal experience and that is that when I am sincerely and happily doing the Lord’s work with other like-minded people, there is a kind of joy that comes from it which cannot be explained. It is a contagious joy that lifts your spirit beyond words… it’s the reason you can be exhausted beyond belief and still have a smile on your face!

My name is Vincenza (aka Vinni).  After attending my first coffee and donuts after the Latin Mass and a "Mothers Rest" event, I could see the possibilities of our parish hall.  I gathered a few people that wanted to help and now have a wonderful time putting events together with Ana, Letty and Piri.  I'm always ready to do what I can to help our church grow in love, spirit and community.

Having been a teacher and a principal in both public and Catholic schools offered many opportunities for organizing events, but most importantly, it revealed the importance of all community members to become contributers to their valued organization whether that was a school , a church or a social organization. My personal faith journey went full circle  -from the Latin Rite of my childhood through the changes and energy of the Second Vatican Council, back to the majesty and beauty of the Latin Rite. I have found great joy in becoming a member of this parish. I value my parish more each day and try to give from what I value.. I am Hungarian by ethnicity. The preparation and offering of hospitality is in the DNA of Hungarians. Working with the Salty Servers simply means being in sync with what is programmed into me. I am very much at home in my church and in its kitchen.  /s/ Piri Taborosi

Not in picture:  Letty joined the Hospitality Ministry. She’s been a Transfiguration parishioner for a little over a year and it was just after the recent Pig Roast that she decided to take a leap of faith and offer us her help. 2 days later, she started cooking for the priests (something they have been looking forward to) and then decided she’d like to make almost 200 Bunuelos for the Pancake Breakfast… from scratch! These were her words at the end of an exhausting week of hard work for the Lord, “This has been the best week of my life!” So, you see… giving,
for the Lord, is undeniably amazing.

Jesus told us that we are "the Salt of the Earth!"  Won't you prayfully consider joining the Salty Servers and together we'll sprinkle our salt on those we serve with joy!

    Reflection: Almsgiving & All-Giving
    • I came across this reflection from One Bread, One Body, 8/10/2023. It was the perfect inspiration on how to arouse hearts and minds to the idea of serving our Lord and His people right here in our Parish Home. Let’s face it, we are a continually-growing church community and our priests have many pastoral duties and sacramental obligations which leave plenty of room for all of us to step up to plate and help fill-in the gaps.

      Reflection: Almsgiving & All-Giving

There is “giving,” of which Jesus Himself said: “There is more happiness in giving than in receiving” (Acts 20:35). Then, there is giving bountifully (2Cor 9:6) and cheerfully, “for God loves a cheerful giver” (2Cor 9:7).

Next, there is “giving till it hurts,” that is, sacrificially. Finally, there is “giving all,” everything we have to live on (see Lk 21:4).

This last kind of giving is the giving:
      • Done by Jesus on the cross and by the martyrs
      • Called for by the first commandment, that is, loving God with all our hearts, all our souls, all our minds, and all our strength (Lk 10:27)
      • By which we receive God’s kingdom (Mt 13:44-46)
      • In which we, by faith, possess everlasting life (see Mt 19:16,21)
      • Which is multipliable (see e.g. Mt14:17-21), and
      • Which is dying to self and bears much fruit (Jn 12:24)

For love of Jesus crucified, give all.

Prayer: Father, may I not diminish the meaning of my life by giving less than “all”.
Promise: “God can multiply His favors among you so that you may always have enough of everything. 2 Cor 9:8.

    •  corned beef &                 Cabbage

      Our latest casserole,
Corned Beef and Cabbage, was served on St. Patricks Day, March 17, 2024.
      It was loved by all.

      We found this recipe on:

      https://frydae.com/corned-beef-and-cabbage-pot-pies/

We opted for instant mashed potatoes instead of flour to make it gluten free.  The corned beef was cooked for 6 hours in onions and a bottle of Guiness beer except for the gluten free; they were cooked in onions and water.

    •    potato ham                chedder

This recipe was used for the Dr. Peter Kwasneiwski Lunch & Lecture on February 11 2024.  It was also a hit!

You can find this recipe on:

      https://www.christinascucina.com/
      potato-ham-and-mozzarella-bake/

Though the recipe called for mozzarella cheese, we opted for cheddar.  We also used bricks of provolone cheese and parmigiano reggiano cheese.  Hand shredded by our own Salty Server Letty.

    •            tURKEY
                  POT PIE

This is a recipe that came out of Ana's recipe box.  It worked when she was at Our Lady of Hope for the Men's Shelter and it worked here in our Parish.
      So yummy!!

      • 1 can Cream of Chicken Soup
      • 1 can Cream of Potato Soup
      • 1 can Veg-All, drained (we opted for frozen veggies)
      • 2 Cups Rotisserie Turkey Breast pieces
      • Pepper, Poultry Seasoning, Curry Powder, to taste
Prepare:  Place 1 pie crust in the bottom of a 10" pie plate.  Pour prepared mixture over crust the, lay second pie crist on top.  Seal and crimp edges together.  Poke holes in crust for venting.  Bake at 350º for 1 hour.
    • 2 Italians french       tomato soup

      Ingredients:
28 oz can tomatoes:  Diced were used in this recipe.
      2 cloves garlic
      2 tsp Thyme
1 medium to large onion, chopped/diced:  Large used for this recipe.
      4 tbs butter (1/2 stick)
3 cups chicken or vegetable stock:  Knorr stock was used in this recipe.
      5 oz heavy cream
3 tbs sugar (or to taste)
Salt and Pepper:  Blessed salt was used in this recipe.
2 eggs, tempered:  beat eggs, add small amount of warmed soup, whisk together.
      2-3 tbs water

Sauté onions and butter in a deep pan until soft, 2-4 minutes.  Add all other ingredients except eggs and water.  Mix together then puree in a food processor until smooth.  Add puree to soup pot.  Temper eggs, add to soup, whisk to blend into the soup and not "cook" the egg.  Add water as needed for desired thickness.
